As our Lord went about doing good (Acts 10:38), so do we seek to help those in need in our community and beyond. James wrote, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27). Paul said, As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith" (Galatians 6:10). This is the pattern we use to help those in need. We begin with our own who are in need, but we also help others in their times of want and difficulty.
Here are a few of the programs that we use to care for those in need:
DORCAS DAY: Dorcas was a Christian lady of the first century who was "full of good works and alms (deeds) which she did" (Acts 9:36). Upon her death, before Peter raised her back from the dead, all of the widows stood by her body weeping and showing the apostle Peter all the coats and garments that she had made for them (v. 39-40). Following this great example we annually hold a free yard sale. Members of the congregation bring things they would put in a yard sale and we give them away those who we have invited who are in need. This event is by invitation only in order to ensure that the goods given away are for those who are truly in need. This is a great event to which we look forward each year.
SCHOOL SUPPLY GIVE AWAY: School supplies can be very expensive for struggling families. Because of this we hold a school supply give away. Sometime before school starts back in August, we work through schools and other programs to find out what supplies are needed and also those who are in need. Again this is an invitation only event.
PANTRY: We maintain a non-perishable food pantry. Use of this pantry is on an appointment basis. You can call the building (770) 887 7353 if you need to use it. There is a a two bag limit however. Also, twice a year we donate our pantry to Raintree Children's Home who we also support on a monthly basis.
SPECIAL NEEDS: Sometimes special needs arise. We handle these with care. Our elders ask to meet with the individuals needing help usually following one of our assemblies on Sunday or Wednesday. To inquire more about this call the church office at (770) 887-7353.
